The Women’s Premier League's inaugural edition is gaining momentum as the five franchises continue to deliver thrilling contests for fans to enjoy. The fifth match of the tournament featured Delhi Capitals and UP Warriors facing off against each other on Tuesday, March 7th, at Dr DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai.
Warriorz captain Alyssa Healy won the toss and chose to field first. Delhi Capitals' dangerous opening duo of Shafali Verma and Meg Lanning provided an electrifying start, putting on 67 runs for the first wicket in just 39 balls. Lanning took the lead in the scoring process, while Verma scored 17 off 14 before Tahila McGrath dismissed her.
However, Lanning continued her fantastic form and scored runs at a brisk pace. She smashed 10 fours and three sixes to score 70 off 42 balls at a strike rate of 166.67. After her dismissal, Alice Capsey played a brilliant cameo of 21 off 10 balls, and Jemimah Rodrigues and Jess Jonassen finished the innings with a 67-run partnership off 34 balls. Rodrigues remained unbeaten on 34 off 22 balls, while Jonassen scored 42* off 20, helping Delhi post a massive total of 211/4.
In response, Warriorz captain Alyssa Healy tried to attack from the start to maintain the required run rate. However, she could not continue for long and was dismissed after scoring 24 off 17. Warriorz then lost the in-form Kiran Navgire and young Shweta Sehrawat in the next five balls, reducing them to 31/3 after 4.2 overs.
Tahila McGrath played a sensational knock of 90* off 50 balls, but did not receive much support from the other end. As a result, Warriorz lost the match by 42 runs. Jess Jonassen was the pick of the bowlers from UP Warriorz, finishing with figures of 3/43 in four overs.
