On Wednesday, Hashim Amla, who had already announced retirement from international cricket after the end of South Africa’s expedition at the 2019 World Cup, announced his retirement from all forms of professional cricket. He had walked out of Test Cricket earlier in the same year after a February match against Sri Lanka at Gqeberha. “Hashim Amla announces retirement from all forms of cricket. The legendary South African batter has declared his playing career over. From everyone at Surrey, thank you for everything Hash. @amlahash," Surrey wrote on Twitter.
Amla who was part of the South African Cricket team when they won the Test Championship Mace in 2012 (from 2003 to 2019, the Test mace would be rewarded to the top-ranked Test team in the ICC Test Championship), will go down as one of the legends of the game. In his 22-year-long career that includes some of the greatest moments of cricket, Amla had amassed 34,104 runs across all formats of the game, 9,282 of which came from his Test Cricket score, which was only next only to Jacques Kallis for his country. This includes the unforgettable 311 not out against England at The Oval, London in 2012 along with 28 hundred. The 39-year-old batting legend still remains the highest test scorer from South Africa.
“I have great memories of The Oval ground and to finally leave it as a player fills me with immense gratitude for what has been. A sincere thank you to (director of cricket Alec Stewart and the entire Surrey staff, players, and members for their support," he said while announcing his retirement. “The Surrey ship runs so professionally that it would make any international player feel a sense of honor just to be involved with. I wish them all the best and many more trophies,” he added.
Apart from Surrey, Amla played county cricket for Derbyshire, Hampshire, Nottinghamshire, and Essex. In the IPL he was part of the Kings XI Punjab franchise and in his country, he played for Kwa-Zulu Natal, Dolphins, and Cape Cobras in South Africa’s domestic competitions.
Because of his fluent cover driving and wristy leg-side strokes, he became one of the most stylish players in the world of cricket. With a test batting average of 46.64, Amla held an even better average in ODIs, with 27 centuries in 181 matches and scoring 8,113 runs at a 49.46 rate. Amla became the first and only South African player to score a triple century in tests. Amla also captained South Africa in 14 tests but resigned mid-way through a series against England in 2015/16 after scoring a double-century at Newlands in Cape Town.
Even towards the end of his professional cricketing career, he led Surrey to the County Championship win in 2022. Surry Club Ambassador Alec Stewart said on his retirement "Everyone at Surrey County Cricket Club will be sad to see Hashim retire, but we all applaud what has been a phenomenal career. He will quite rightly go down as a great of the game,". In first-class cricket, he scored 57 centuries with the last one coming versus Northamptonshire in September 2022.
A few months back Amla embarked on a coaching career, joining MI Cape Town as a batting coach in the ongoing SA20.
